Enamel, the outer layer of your tooth, is the hardest substance in the entire human body. It is made of tightly packed crystals of a mineral called hydroxyapatite, and it works like a shield to protect everything underneath.
The 5 Layers of a Tooth
Teeth are more complex than they look! Each layer has a special role in keeping your tooth healthy, strong, and firmly in place.
Enamel
The hardest tissue in the body, a transparent, white shield made of hydroxyapatite crystals.
Dentin
Beneath enamel, this slightly yellow layer makes up most of the tooth and is formed by odontoblast cells.
Pulp
The living center of the tooth, packed with nerves and blood vessels that nourish and protect it.
Cementum
A thin calcified layer covering the root, anchoring the tooth in the jawbone.
Periodontal Ligament
A ring of fibers connecting tooth to bone, absorbing chewing forces and allowing tiny natural movement.
From First Tooth to Full Smile
Growing up means growing new teeth. Here's the big picture of how your smile changes over the years.
About 6 Months - First Baby Tooth Appears
The adventure begins. Baby teeth start emerging around 6 months of age.
Age 2-3 - Full Set of 20 Baby Teeth
By age 2 or 3, all 20 primary teeth are usually in place.
Age 6 - Adult Teeth Begin Arriving
The first permanent molars appear in the back of the mouth around age 6.
Age 12-13 - Most Adult Teeth Are In
The majority of permanent teeth have arrived by early adolescence.
Age 17-21 - Wisdom Teeth Complete the Set
The final four molars, called wisdom teeth, may emerge in late adolescence.
TOO-TEE's Top Care Tips
Keeping teeth healthy does not have to be hard. Here are the most important habits for a lifetime of great smiles.
Brush Twice a Day
Use a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste and brush for two minutes, morning and night.
Visit the Dentist Regularly
Regular checkups catch problems early and make sure teeth are growing in the right direction.
Watch What You Eat
Sugary snacks and drinks wear down enamel. Crunchy veggies and water keep teeth strong and clean.
Don't Forget to Floss
Flossing clears the spaces between teeth that a toothbrush cannot reach.
